A few years
ago, I attended a writer's workshop where a book editor spoke on
editing. As everyone walked in the class, each person was told to pick a button out
of the box—any
button, then take a seat, but hold on to the button. All during the class the
instructor gave a multitude of helpful tips about writing, editing and being
consistent.
As she was
getting ready to close the class, she had everyone hold up their
button. "That button is a gift from me to you." She went on to explain, that over the years,
she'd been asked numerous
times what is the secret of writing a book? She always gave the same
answer. It is an answer if followed, everyone will be able to finish that book
they started over ten years ago. Now listen
closely.
If you're having trouble finishing your
manuscript, try the button method. Find a button that appeals to your
temperament-in my case, the fancier the better. Place the button in a prominent
visible spot where you will see it anytime you are at your computer or where you
sit to write. Use it as a reminder to keep your butt-on the chair. Now
when you begin writing and you are tempted to get up from your chair for that cup of coffee,
that cookie, to answer the telephone, or to take a break, look at your button
and repeat these words. 'The only way I will ever get this manuscript completed
is to set my butt-on the chair and not get up.' That, my writer friend, is
the button method.
Now, you know the
secret of how to get that book, story, article, or poem finished. It's the only way you will ever get any writing
done and completed to send off to that publisher or for whatever you goal in
writing has become.
